Many people will know especially those who have an interest in collecting ephemera for investment purposes that old comic books can have tremendous monetary value, indeed a copy of Action Comics # 1 ( The 1st appearance of Superman 1938 ) recently sold for $2 million dollars, copies of Detective Comics #27 ( The 1st appearance of Batman 1939 ) have also sold for over $1 million dollars, many investors have recently turned to comic books as a serious investment opportunity as they seem to offer a reliable and sometimes a spectacular return on investment.

If you would like to invest in something away from the norm, stocks, shares, bonds etc ,comic books can offer a great low risk item to invest your money into, as with investing in anything having knowledge on the subject greatly increases your chances of success, obviously most of us do not have the collateral to start investing in these really old comic books from the 1930s, 1940s etc so do more modern and affordable comic books offer us a realistic opportunity to make some cash, well the good news is yes.

Now there are some comic book collectors who frown upon the buyer of books who buy purely for investment purposes , in a way that is understandable, some comic book devotees consider it as some sort of sacrilege, to them the comic book is there to be read and appreciated for its artwork not to be bought and sold as a commodity, to be honest i am in between both camps, being a lover of comic books and a speculator, i have a collection that i would not want to part with and others i buy purely to sell on at a later date. So what if you have no knowledge of comic books but would like to invest in some, well this where i am here to help.

Comic books are roughly indexed into four ages, the Golden Age ( 1938 to mid fifties), the Silver Age ( late 1950s to 1969 ), the Bronze Age ( 1970 to 1980 ), the Modern Age ( 1981 onwards ) , some collectors are starting to define the early 1980s as a new period for comic books calling it the Copper Age, this will probably become more prevalent as these comics get older but for the purpose of this article we will just class this period as modern.

The Modern Age of comic books is what we will concentrate on as these books are 1, easier to find, 2, easier to find in great condition, 3, more affordable to the new collector.

So what is the difference between a comic book and a collectable comic book also usually known as a key comic, there are many factors that can make a comic a key comic, the most common being that it is a first issue or a first appearance of a character that has become popular, the first artwork of a well loved artist can be another, the death of a beloved character, or the start of a famous storyline can all contribute to making a key comic, one other reason which is only particular to modern comics is the variant cover, if for example a comic had a print run of 50,000, 5000 copies of that comic may have been printed with a different cover to the rest and so making it rarer and https://opciones.xyz harder to find, sometimes it is only the variant copy of some issues that make it worth collecting. Another and perhaps the most important factor when investing in a comic book is its condition, if look at one of the auction sites on the net or the comic book price guide you will see abbreviations written next to a comic book, for example Action Comics 415 vg, this particular abbreviation means that the comic is in Very Good condition, there are other abbreviations used Pr Poor, Fn Fine, Vf Very Fine, NM Near Mint, M Mint, because it is not unusual to find modern comics in amazing condition i would recommend only investing in comics that are graded Very Fine at least and preferably Near mint or Mint. You can buy books that have been graded by a third party such as CGC based in Florida, these books are graded and then encapsulated between two pieces of plastic to slow down any deterioration caused by the aging process. These books are graded using a points system that corresponds with the traditional descriptive grading for example 8.5 equals Very Fine, 9.4 equals Near mint etc, as these third party graded books have been accepted as being reliably graded, expect to pay a premium if you decide to purchase one of these books.
