EXISTENCE OF SHADOW PUPPETS AS A TRADITIONAL DRAMA IN SIDOARJO REGENCY

Abstract


Efforts to revitalize shadow puppet shows in Sidoarjo Regency are needed to keep up the existence of traditional drama as a cultural heritage in the midst of technological sophistication. In its relevance to culture, revitalization has an important role to live and support a tradition in order to be able to maintain its identity. The purpose of this research is to (1) describe the existence of shadow puppet plays in Sidoarjo Regency at present, (2) describe the role and function of shadow puppet plays in Sidoarjo Regency, and (3) describe the efforts that need to be made by the community and the Sidoarjo Regency Government in revitalizing drama shadow puppets. This study uses descriptive qualitative methods to describe the existence of shadow puppets in Sidoarjo Regency, the role and function of shadow puppet play, to the efforts offered to the public and the government in revitalizing shadow play. The results showed that the existence of shadow puppet in Sidoarjo regency began to fade in popularity. Though the presence of shadow puppets as traditional drama is able to provide its own function and role for the community, which is to be a means of entertainment, a medium for social control, a means of teaching and education, to a medum for people's aspirations in expressing hopes and criticisms of the government policy of Sidoarjo Regency. Thus, several efforts need to be made to regain the existence of shadow puppet in Sidoarjo Regency, namely the provision of variations in the language of Arek, Indonesian interlude in antawacana delivery, and developing more contemporary forms of shadow puppets, and conducting structured revitalization.
