Abstract

Measurement "mean length of utterance†(MLU) involving number of morpheme in the transcripts are widely applied to the utterances of all ages and are generally interpreted as an index of developing grammar.  However, no one compared children without and with language disorders that influences MLU and the number of forms in utterances. This study used qualitative methods with a case study approach. The research subjects were children without and with language disorders with a 4-year-old child with 100 utterances. Utterances on children without and with language disorders have very significant differences. In children without language disorders having an MLU of 5.34 at stage X means that children without a language disorder have a higher MLU because at the age of 4 the child has MLU 4.5 and above. On the other hand, children with language disorders who have MLU of 1.85 are in stage II with ages 27-28 months which means they are at a low stage because they should be at stage X. However, it must be admitted that children's language acquisition has different abilities.
