Novak Djokovic needed just 89 minutes to beat Tennys Sandgren 6-2, 6-4 on Tuesday and advance to the quarterfinals of the Western & Southern Open in New York.

The Serbian star never dropped his serve, saving four break points, and won 84 percent of his first-serve points.

The result came a day after Djokovic struggled with a neck ailment during a straight-sets win in his second-round match.

"I'm as close to (being) painless (in my) neck as I can be," Djokovic said Tuesday.

"I'm feeling very good, and that has obviously positively reflected on my game today."

Next up for Djokovic is a matchup with Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff, who topped Belgium's David Goffin 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in third-round play on Tuesday.

"It will be very nice," Struff said of matching up with Djokovic.
"I played him at the Australian Open, which was a very good match, I think, a very good match for me."

Djokovic captured their first-round match in Melbourne 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, 스보벳 one of his 20 consecutive victories this calendar year without a loss.

Third-seeded Daniil Medvedev of Russia and eighth-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain will meet in another quarterfinal match.

Medvedev beat Slovenia's Aljaz Bedene 6-3, 6-3, and Bautista Agut rallied past Russia's Karen Khachanov 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Fourth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece moved on to a quarterfinal date with unseeded American Reilly Opelka. Tsitsipas edged the United States' John Isner 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4), and Opelka eliminated sixth-seeded Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 7-6 (4).

Tsitsipas kept pace with the big-serving Isner, only trailing in aces 11-10 while winding up with fewer double faults (4-2).

"It was a very difficult match," Tsitsipas said.

"My level of focus and attention had to be there all the time. John is a very unpredictable player. He can be very aggressive sometimes. If you don't play with first serves, it can get quite dangerous with him, so I think being aggressive and pressing all the time was something very important today. ...

"I did feel very comfortable, didn't feel any nerves.

Even when it came to the tiebreaks. I felt very comfortable and decisive with the tactics I wanted to follow. Overall it was a great performance and I think I can still improve a few things in tomorrow's match. Not putting any pressure on me, but I think I can be even more aggressive and play with higher percentages."

The other quarterfinal will feature Canadian Milos Raonic and Serbian Filip Krajinovic. Raonic beat Great Britain's Andy Murray 6-2, 6-2, and Krajinovic routed Hungarian qualifier Marton Fucsovics 6-2, 6-1.

The Western & Southern Open is normally played in Mason, Ohio, but it was moved to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The U.S. Open will also be held at the same site starting Monday.
